Cartilage Transplant: A New Hope

Normally the cartilage starts showing wear and tear as we age and this disease is a called osteoarthritis. The cartilage cells once damaged are lost forever. We can accept the degenerative osteoarthritis as our age advances say more then 60 years but what happens if we loose our cartilage when we are in our twenties or thirties? This can happen due to injuries or accidents. We had no cure for such patients who used to develop osteoarthritis at a very young age. We now have a new revolutionary technique where we can grow the cartilage in a laboratory. It has done in two steps.-

In the first step we take the bone marrow of the patient itself from the iliac bone . This is the day care procedure and can be performed in local anaesthesia. The cell was then sent to laboratory for cell culture specially the cartilage. This will take 3 to 4 weeks.

In the second stage, the prepared stem cells or cartilages are transplanted surgically into the defect either arthroscopically or by mini open technique.
